Yesterday our ever-auspicious MD Howard was asked to attend the first ever ‘Taking London Global–Exports and Your Business’ seminar at City Hall to be a guest speaker and discuss his experience of planning and succeeding in exporting, with knomo.
The presentation went off without a hitch and while the rest of the event was more for small businesses trying to work out how they can get in on the exporting act, we thoroughly enjoyed the Google presentation on their new ‘Export Advisor’ online service – simply type in a product/service you are interested to export (the example used was 'shortbread') and then follow instructions to see how many countries look up shortbread through their Google search service, to ascertain which countries may be worth exporting to. Of course this is no substitute for the sound advice that the UK Trade and Investment office can provide, but hell, we’ve been loving testing out some weird and wonderful ideas on the new cyber service. We found it most interesting that there are Haggis fans as far afield as Brazil and Argentina, and Stetson hat-lovers in as far-flung regions as Turkey and South Korea.
Boris’s speech afterwards was also most exhilarating – he didn’t bungle it once! All jokes aside though, the idea is a brilliant one – we can help to bring the UK out of recession if the clever business boffins out there learn how to export their business successfully and bring more money into the UK. Thank goodness our Mayor has cottoned on to this and is taking decisive action!
Look out for Howard speaking at an export conference near you in the future!
